Birth of George William Payne in FreeBMD in January-March 1841 in St Lukes (2 290). A copy of his entry of birth No. 158 in 1841 Old Street, St Luke, Middlesex gives his name as George William, birth on 23 January 1841 at 116 Old Street, St Luke, Middlesex, his father is given as Henry Payne, a carman, and his mother as Mary Ann Payne formerly Kelly. His mother was the informant and as she made her mark I assume she could not write.

Birth of George William Payne in the IGI on 23 January 1841 and christening on 21 February 1841 at Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, parents Henry and Mary Ann Payne. The same information is in Ancestry All England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 where a second entry gives just the baptism at Old Street, Finsbury.

Two entries in Ancestry London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917 for George William Payne baptised 21 February 1841 at St Luke Islington, father Henry Payne, and mother Mary Ann in one "Page 248 Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Saint Luke in the County of Middlesex in the Year 1841 1841 Feby 21st No. 1977 George William Born Jany 23d [parents] Henry, [a] Porter, & Mary Ann Payne [of] 116 Old Street" and May Ann in the other, the original of which has all the entries crossed out, but whose contents are the same of the first except there is no heading, the layout is different, and the mother's name is May Ann.

In the 1841 census as George Payne aged 4 months, born in Middlesex, and living with Henry and Mary A Payne (parents?), and Mary A Payne (sister?) in Brewer Street, Goswell Street, St James Clerkenwell, Middlesex.

His brother was born on 5 February 1845, registered in January-March 1845 in Clerkenwell, and baptised on 2 March 1845 at St Mary, Upper Street, Islingon when they were living in Sidney Street.

His sister was registered in October-December 1846 in Clerkenwell and baptised on 4 October 1846 at St Mary, Upper Street, Islington when they were living in Sidney Street.

"Page 190 1864 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St James Clerkenwell in the County of Middlesex. [No.] 379 July 16th George Payne [aged] 20 [a] Br [and] Brass Finisher [of] 4 Brewer Street [father] Henry Payne [a] traveller, [and] Frances Downes [aged] 19, [a] Spr [of] 16 Buxton Street [father] William Downes [a] Shoemaker. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns [...] in the Presence of us Thomas Morris his mark [and] Mary Downes".

His daughter was registered in July-September 1861 in St Luke.

In the 1871 census as George W Payne aged 30, born in St Luke, Middlesex, employed as a viceman (brass), and living with his wife (Francis), and three sons (Frederick, George W and Henry I) and daughter (Mary A) at 13 Tower Steet, St George, Southwark, Surrey (there were 4 families living at this address). I cannot find this in the London A-Z, but from the census it is close to Westminster Bridge Road near St George's Circus.

On a copy of the Entry of Birth No. 211 in 1874 in London Road, St Saviour, Surrey for Emma Louisa Alice Payne born on 30 April 1874, he was a brass finisher of 13 Tower Street, Southwark, and she was baptised on 24 May 1874 at St Mary, Lambeth.

His son was registered in October-December 1876 in Greenwich, his wife was buried on 10 March 1877 in Lewisham, and his last son in July-September 1877 in Greenwich.

In the 1881 Census as George W Paine (sic - on original) aged 40, born in London, Middlesex, a brass finisher and living with his wife (Sarah), three sons (Charles, Frederick and Henry J) and daughter (Emma L A) at 38 Clyde street, Deptford St Paul, Kent.

On the copy of the entry of marriage for his son Frederick Payne and Elizabeth Reed on 26 December 1890 he was a brass finisher.

In the 1891 census George William Ryon (sic - in the index, Payne on the original) aged 50, born in St Luke, Middlesex, employed as a valve filter waste water maintainer, and living with his wife (Sarah) in 2 rooms at 142 Quinn Square, St George the Martyr, Southwark (this on the westside of Waterloo Road between Webber Row and Tower Street (which no longer exists)).

His son was registered in October-December 1892 in St Saviour.

In the 1901 census as George Payne aged 60, born in London, employed as a fitter, and a patient at the Metropolitan Convalescent Institution at Bexhill on Sea, Sussex. His wife and son were living at 76 Oakley Street, Lambeth.

His wife died in January-March 1905 in Thanet.

In the 1911 census as George William Payne aged 70, born in Rotherhithe, Middlesex, widowed, a brass finisher, and boarding with George Levi Marshall (aged 41, born in Warehorne, Kent, and a green grocer working on his own account), his wife (Emily Florence aged 41, born in St Pancras, Middlesex and a boarding housekeeper), son (Cyril George aged 7 and born in Margate, Kent), two daughters (Doris Victoria aged 6 and born in London, Middlesex and Elsie Florence aged 8 and born in Margate, Kent), and two other boarders (Alfred Hurst aged 18, born in London, Middlesex, single and a paper hanger, and William Henry Knight aged 22, born in Hereford, Herefordshire, single and a baker) in eight rooms at 78 Victoria Road, Margate, Kent.

From information in his son's military records he was living at 9 Dorset Street, Newington Causeway, SE during the war. However he appears to have moved by 1922 as a postcard was returned returned to sender at Gloucester Buildings, Regents Park marked Gone Away.

In the 1921 census as George W Payne aged 80 years 6 months, born in Ross and Cromarty, Scotland (sic - in the index, Lewis on the original, (could this be Lewes), and not written in his hand - probably that of Mr Hurst who was the respondent), widowed, and a retired brass finisher, and boarding at 49 Buckingham Road, Margate, Kent. This was an overflow from the previous form, the head being Alfred Hurst (aged 29 years 9 months, born in Blackfriars, London and a decorator working on his own account) and living with his wife (Maud) and daughter (Phyllis), and seven visitor boaders, all but one born in London.

Entry in FreeBMD for the death of George W Payne in January-March 1926 aged 84 in Thanet (2a 1344).

A copy of Entry of Death no 4 1926 in the sub-district of Minster in the district of Thanet, Kent gives the death of George William Payne aged 84, formerly a brass finisher engineer on 17 January 1926 at Hill House, Minster due to senility. His address is given as 49 Buckingham Road, Margate and the death was reported by the occupier of Hill House, Minster, A E Fussell, on 19 January 1926. Buckingham Road is off the A254 Ramsgate Road just south of the railway line.

My father's records state he was an engineer, born 23 January 1841 and died at Margate in 1925.

There are twenty six entries in Ancestry Family Trees for George William Payne, but two families are confused.
