On a copy of the Entry of Birth No. 211 in 1874 in London Road, St Saviour, Surrey, Emma Louisa Alice Payne was born on 30 April 1874 at 13 Tower Street, Southwark, parents George William Payne, employed as a brass finisher, and Frances Payne formerly Downes. The informant was F Payne, her mother, on 8 June 1874.

Her brother was born in Greenwich in late 1876, her mother died there in 1877 and her father married Sarah Jane Gill in Thanet in 1879.

Married in the St Nicholas Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after banns in the Presence of us George W Payne and Margaret Matilda Greengrass."

On a copy for the Entry of Birth of Edward James Cowles registered on 26 September 1895, her name is given as Emma Louisa Alice Payne and she lived at 44 Kashgar Road.

His daughter was born in Plumstead and registered in January-March 1897 in Woolwich.

Her daughter was born on 10 March 1913, registered in April-June 1913 in Dartford, and baptised on 18 May 1913 at St Augustine of Canterbury, Belvedere, Kent, when they were living at 49 Ripley Road.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register as Emma L A Cowles born 30 April 1874, widowed and living at Angora, Belle Vue Drive, Billericay, Essex. Another family Ralph G and Elizabeth Fitt were living at the same address.

Sylvia lived with her for a time during the Second World War, and Emma stayed for a time at Ingledene after the war.

Death of Emma L A Cowles in FreeBMD in July-September 1946 aged 72 in Brentwood (4a 307).

On a copy of Entry of Death Number 160 in Billericay, Brentwood, Essex in 1946 it states Emma Louisa Alice Cowles died in 29 June 1946 at The Retreat, Great Burstead. She was 72 and widow of Edward James Cowles, a smallholder of Tolangi, Church Road, Basildon. She died of cardiac failure, a general haemorrage and arteria sclerosis. The informant was M A Cowles her daughter, living at Tolangi, and was registered on 1 July 1946.

Buried in grave 110 at Vange with her husband.

Entry in Ancestry England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 for Emma Louisa Alice Cowles died 29 June 1946 in Essex, probate 28 Mar 1947 in London. "Cowles Emma Louisa Alice of Tolangi Church-road Basildon, Essex widow died 29 June 1946 at The Retreat Billericay Essex Probate London 28 March to Frederick William Challis farm worker and Marion Annie Challis (wife of the said Frederick William Challis). Effects £923 6s." Marion Anne Davis was the neice of Edward Thomas Cowles.

Maureen (Curtis) Kristjanson has an entry in Ancestry Public member Trees for Emma Payne born in 1875 and her marriage to Edward Cowles in 1894 in Woolwich, Norfolk, and six children Arthur, Ella, Ethel Emily, Marion, Nellie F A and Edward James. Another entry gives her birth on 30 April 1874. There are fourteen other entries.
