His father died between the 1881 and 1891 censuses, but I cannot locate an entry.

I cannot find an entry in the 1891 census. His mother was widowed and he was not living with her.

"Page 42 [...] 1894 Marriage solemnized at St Nicholas Church in the Parish of Plumstead in the County of Kent [No.] 84 15th July 1894 Edward Thomas Cowles [aged] 26, [a] bachelor [and] Fireman [of] 141 Chesnut Road, [father] James Cowles (deceased) [a] coachman, [and] Emma Louisa Alice Payne [aged] 20, [a] spinster [of] 141 Chesnut Road, [father] George William Payne, [a] fitter. Married in the St Nicholas Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after banns in the Presence of us George W Payne and Margaret Matilda Greengrass."

On a copy of the entry of birth for Edward James Cowles born on 18 August 1895 and registered on 26 September 1895 he is stated to be the father, living at 44 Kashgar Road and his employment was stated to be a fireman on an outfall drainage boat, (these boats took the sewage from the outfall pipes near Woolwich, devised by Joseph Bazalgette between 1859 and 1875 for diverting rainwater and waste into the lower reaches of the Thames in London, down river to be dumped at sea).

His daughter was born in Plumstead and registered in January-March 1897 in Woolwich.

His son was born on 15 October 1898 in Plumstead and registered in October-December 1898 in Woolwich.

In the 1901 census as Edwd Cowles aged 33, born in Greenwich, employed as a Engine Greaser at the Outfall Works, and living with his wife (Emma), two sons (Arthur and Edwd), daughter (Ethel) and mother-in-law (this must be his mother as her name is Emily Cowles) in 4 rooms at 27 Kashgar Road, Plumstead, London. All three children were born in Plumstead so he had probably lived there since his marriage.

His daughter was born on 9 March 1902 in Plumstead and registered in in April-June 1902 in Woolwich.

His daughter was born on 8 May 1906 at 11 Ebenezer Terrace, Belvedere, Dartford, registered in April-June 1906 in Dartford, and both daughters were baptised on 27 May 1906 at All Saints, Belvedere when he was an engine oiler of 11 Ebenezer Terrace.
