Notes

Birth of Arthur Davis in FreeBMD in July-September 1858 in Coventry (6d 383).

Christening of Arthur Davis in the IGI on 8 February 1860 at Holy Trinity, Coventry, Warwick, mother Jane Davis.

His mother married William Orton (subsequently spelt Horton) on 7 August 1860 at Holy Trinity Coventry.

In the 1861 census as Arthur Davis aged 2, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, and living with his grandparents (Daniel and Eliza Davis) at 18 Bishopgate Green, Coventry Holy Trinity, Warwickshire.

In the 1871 census as Arthur Horton aged 13, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, and living with his (step)father (William), mother (Jane), two half-brothers (George and William), two sisters (Edda and Mary E), a boarder (George Davis aged 27, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, widowed, and a labourer at the gas works - a relative?), and his daughter (Elizabeth aged 2 and born in Birmingham, Warwickshire) at 10 Mill Lane, Erdington, Aston, Warwickshire.

In 1881 census as Arthur Davies (original illegible) aged 22, born in Coventy (sic - in the index), Warwickshire, single, a general labourer, and lodging at 83 Old Woolwich Road, Greenwich, Kent with James Cowles (future father-in-law), his wife (Emily), their son (Edward), and two male lodgers (Thomas Heavers and William Seuisbury aged 21, born in Deptford, single and employed as a boiler maker), a female visitor Elizabeth Blunt (aged 22, born in Cambridge, unmarried and employed as a nurse), a male visitor Harry Horbley (aged 50, born in Deptford, unmarried, and unemployed), and a sister named Edward Horbley (aged 60 born in Greenwich, unmarried, and unemployed) at 83 Old Woolwich Road, Greenwich, Kent.

Marriage of Arthur Davis and Emily Jane Cowles in FreeBMD in October-December 1882 in Greenwich (1d 1477).

Marriage of Arthur Davis aged 25, father William Davis, and Emily Jane Cowles aged 19, father James Cowles, in the IGI on 25 December 1882 at Christ Church, Greenwich, Kent. The same information is in Ancestry All England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973.

Entry in Ancestry London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 for Arthur Davis aged 25, father William Davis, and Emily Jane Cowles aged 19, father James Cowles, on 25 December 1882 at Greenwich East Christ Church. "1882 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Christ Church Greenwich in the County of Kent. No 48 Dec 25 1882 A?r (name illegible because of a large ink drop) Davis aged 25, a Bachelor and Boilermaker of 5 Church St, father William Davis, a Labourer, and Emily Jane Cowles aged 19, a Spinster of Kingston? Terrace, father James Cowles, a Carman. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns in the Presence of us James Cowles and Clara Elizabeth Cowles". I have my doubts regarding his father's name as his mother was not married at his birth - he may well be refering to William Orton.

His first daughter was christened in Greenwich in 1884 when he was a boiler maker at Longstone Terrace, and second born in Canning Town, Essex in 1885.

In the 1891 census as Arthur Davis aged 33, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, a ship's stoker, and living with his wife (Jane), daughter (Marion) and a visitor (Mary L Parker aged 19, unemployed and born in East markham, Nottinghamshire) at 3 Crescent Road, Erith, Kent.

His daughter was born in Plumstead in 1895.

In the 1901 census as Arthur Davis aged 43, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, employed as driver of steam yacht, and living with his wife (Jane), and two daughters (Jennie and Marion) in four rooms at 33 Crossness (there is a Lane and a Footpath), Erith, Kent.

In the 1911 census as Arthur Davis aged 48, born in Warwickshire, a steam launch engine driver for LCC, and living with his wife (Jane), two daughters (Jenney and Marion) in four rooms at 33 Crossness, Abbey Wood, Kent.

Death of Arthur Davis in FreeBMD in April-June 1921 aged 64 in Greenwich (1d 834).

There are two entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees for Arthur Davies born in 1860, his marriage to Emily Jane Cowles in Greenwich, London, and his last two daughters. Maureen Kristjanson gives his marriage in 1882.

Greenwich was transfered from Kent to London in 1889.
