"Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of St Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey in the Year 1871 [...] Dec 10 No 869 Charles son of George William, a viceman, and Fanny Payne of Tower Street".
The family were living at 13 Tower Street, Southwark at the birth of his sister in 1874, his brother was born in Greenwich in late 1876, his mother died there in 1877 and his father married Sarah Jane Gill in Thanet in 1879.
In the 1881 Census as Charles Paine aged 7 in the index, 9 on the original, born in Lambeth, Surrey, and living with his father (George W), (step)mother (Sarah) and two brothers (Frederick and Henry J) and sister (Emma L A) at 38 Clyde street, Deptford St Paul, Kent.
In the 1891 census as Charles A Pyne (sic on the original), aged 20, born in London, single, a book binders apprentice) and living with his brother (Henry C), sister-in-law (Emily A), and a boarder (Charles Clark aged 24, born in Broadmoor, Berkshire, single and a printer's compositor) at 12 Erlanger Road, St Paul Deptford (near New Cross Gate).
