In the 1861 census as Joseph Paine aged 40, born in Brighton, employed as a railway labourer, and living with his wife (Emma), seven sons (Frederick, Friend, George, Henry, Josephs, Stephen and Thomas), two daughters (Caroline and Emma) and a lodger (George Sargent aged 16, and born in Brighton) at 6 Cavendish Place North, Brighton St Peter, Sussex.

In the 1871 census as Joseph Paine aged 50, born in Brighton, employed as a labourer in iron works, and living with his wife (Emma), three sons (George, Henry and William), three daughters (Annie, Caroline and Elizabeth) and a lodger (Charles Still aged 26, born in Brighton, unmarried and employed as a bricklayers labourer) at 48 Denmark Road, Willesdon, Middlesex (just east of Queens Park Underground ).
