In the 1861 census as Henry Paine aged 5, born in Brighton, and living with his parents (Joseph and Emma), six brothers (Frederick, Friend, George, Joseph, Stephen and Thomas), two sisters (Caroline and Emma) and a lodger (George Sargent) at 6 Cavendish Place North, Brighton St Peter, Sussex.

In the 1871 census as Henry Paine aged 15, born in Brighton, employed as a labourer in iron works, and living with his parents (Joseph and Emma), two brothers (George and William), three sisters (Annie, Caroline and Elizabeth) and a lodger (Charles Still aged 26, born in Brighton, unmarried and employed as a bricklayers labourer) at 48 Denmark Road, Willesdon, Middlesex (just east of Queens Park Underground ).

His father died in 1871.

In the 1881 census as Henry Paine aged 25, born in Brighton, unmarried, employed as a general labourer, and boarding with Thomas Novis (aged 38, born in Newhaven, Sussex and employed as a bricklayer), his wife (Alice aged 33 and born in Seaford), his children (Alice aged 5, Jane aged 18 months (not in index), John aged 8 and Thomas aged 11 all born in Eastbourne), four visitors (Eliza Mockford aged 30, born in Seaford, widowed and no stated employment and her three children Alice aged 5, Robert aged 8 and Thomas aged 3 all born in Newhaven, Sussex), and three other boarders (Alfred Winter aged 22 and born in Seaford, Thomas Green aged 28 and born in Cambridge, and Alfred Winter aged 22 and born in Cumberland) at 22 Tower Street, Eastbourne, Sussex.
