This Gendex contains entries for the Larby (Larbey, Larkby) family, relatives of Doris Mary Smallridge, my second cousin.
The earliest reference is to Morry Larby/Larbie/L'Aubery/L'Oberie registered as a fyner and his wife Kateryn in the Alien Roll of 1 July 1544 where it is stated they have been in England 20 years from France. They were Huguenots who had brought the blast furnace techology from North France to the Weald iron works, first in East Sussex, but later moved west. There were employed both as fyners in the hammers and as colliers (charcoal makers). A Nicolas Larby was christened in Lynchmere, Sussex in 1552 (from George Larby).
