Notes

Entry in the IGI for the christening of James Larby on 3 March 1680 in Frensham, Surrey, father James Larby.

There is an entry in the IGI for the marriage of James Larby and Sarah Mare in Farnham, Surrey on 27 October 1715. This is also in West Surrey Family History Society West Surrey Marriages which adds that James Larby was of Linchmere, Sussex which is just across the border from Pitfold where I believe the family was living from the christenings of the later children.

There are two christenings in the IGI for James and Richard Larby, parents James and Sarah, in Bepton, Sussex. I can find no other marriage of James and Sarah. Bepton is 10 miles south of Linchmere, but there was a detached part of the parish just east of Liphook at Great Brookham (which is now part of Linchmere). In 1568 Henry Joscelyn sold the manor of Bepton with the advowson of the church to Anthony Browne, Viscount Montague, since when it has formed part of the Cowdray Estate and followed the descent of Cowdray. From: 'Bepton', A History of the County of Sussex: Volume 4: The Rape of Chichester (1953), pp. 41-3. Linchmere Manor was also owned by the Montagues of Cowdray.

Monique Jones has an entry for James Larby born about 1689 in Haslemere, parents James Larby and Mary Grevatt, died about 8 March 1696 and buried 11 March 1696, but I can find no evidence to back this up - a John Larby was buried on the date given.

Relationship

James Larby was the fifth great granduncle of Cyril Larby, my second cousin once removed.
