In the 1851 census as Margaret Charman aged 7, born in Horsham, Sussex, and living with her parents (John and Jane), two brothers (George and James), and three sisters (Ann, Jane and Mary) at Tollgate House, Ifield, Sussex.

In the 1861 census as Margaret Charman aged 17, born in Sussex, single, a palour maid, and living with her uncle and aunt (Thomas and Sarah Moore), and a servant (Louisa Grinyer aged 14, and born in Brighton, Sussex) at 12 Bedford Street, Kemp Town, Brighton, Sussex. Two other families lived at the same address, one in the dining room and the other in the drawing room.
