In the 1851 census as John Baker aged 8, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with his parents (Richard and Mary), three brothers (James, Richard and William), three sisters (Fanny, Jane and Martha), three servants (Heather Court aged 23, born in Thursley, single and a house servant, and John Moorey aged 21 and single, and William Moorey aged 13, both born in Thursley, Surrey and agricultural labourers), and a visitor (Phebe Woods aged 49, born in Frensham, Surrey, married and no stated employment at Emley Farm, Thursby (sic), Surrey.

His mother died in Shalford in 1860.

In the 1861 census as John Baker aged 18, born in Frenchham (sic - on the orginal), Surrey, single, a worker on the farm and living with his widowed father (Richard), four brothers (Fredrick, James, Richard and William), two sisters (Jane and Mary), cousin (Mary Ann Baker), aunt? (Eliza Loveland), and a servant (Mary Smithers aged 18, born in Thursley, Surrey and single) in Chinthurst Lane, Shalford, Surrey.

Married in the Parish Church accoding to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns."

His three sons and daughter were born in Prospect Place in 1873 to 1880. He was an oil and colourman (mixed oil paint with pigments) in 1874, a labourer in 1875 to 1880.

In the 1881 census as John Baker aged 38, born in Churt, Surrey, a general labourer at a soap works, and living with his wife (Margaret), and three sons (Edward, Harry and James) and daughter (Margaret) at 5 Prospect Place, Greenwich, London.

His daughter was born in Prospect Place in 1883 when he was a labourer, son in Greenwich in 1885, and daughter in Croydon in 1887.

In the 1891 census as John Baker aged 48, born in Church (sic - in the index, Churt on the original), Surrey, a general labourer, and living with his wife (Margaret), four sons (Edward, Frank, Harry and James) and three daughters (Florence, Lilian and Margaret) in three rooms at 20 Forster Road, Croydon, Surrey.

In the 1901 census as John Baker aged 58, born in Guitelford (sic - in the index, Guildford on the original), Surrey, a milk carrier and living with his wife (Margaret), son (Frank) and three daughters (Florence, Lillian E and Margaret M) in four rooms at 14 Addelaide Street, Croydon, Surrey.
