Service No: G/4384 Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), 2nd Bn. Son of John and Margaret Baker; husband of Ellen Elizabeth Gertrude Baker, of 13 Keeley Road, West Croydon, London.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 for Harry Ernest Richard Baker attested on 21 August 1914 for Army Reserve for 1 year's service. He was aged 40 years 11 months, born in Greenwich and a window cleaner of 9 Campbell Road, height 5 ft 6.75 in, weight 128 lb, chest 35+2 in, tattoed on both fore arms. He had served in the Royal West Kent for 16 years. He was posted as a private 52 in 2nd Batt Queens Royal West Surrey Regt on 21 August 1914 and was at home 21 August 1914 to 2 February 1915. He was with the India Expeditionary Force (in Royal West Kent?) from 3 February 1915 (having been appointed L Corpl on 1 February) to 4 March 1915, home from 5 March 1915 to 9 December 1915, and with the IE Force 10 December 1915 to 27 March 1916. He embarked on 10 December 1915 at Keyham Dockyard, and disembarked in Ashar on 8 January 1916. He was admitted to hospital on 23 January 1916 in Kurna with diarrhrea, transfered to Basrah 27 January 1916, discharged on 4 February 1916, admitted to hospital Basrah on 15 March 1916 WVD mental and transfered sick to India on HS Madras. He died of a fracture to the base of the skull in the Station Hospital, Colaba at 4:15 pm on 27 March 1916. There is considerable correspondence in an attempt by the War Office to get the Report of the Inquiry into his death which went on till 13 February 1917 or later. On 14 July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 10/- per week from 1 January 1917, increased to 13/9d on 4 April 1917. A memo dated 24 November 1917 re return of private property gives the address of Mrs Ellen E G Baker as 9 Campbell Road West Croydon. A letter to Mrs E Baker of 13 Keely Road W Croydon dated 19 January 1923 enclosed a photograph of her husband's grave.

The Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial commemorates more than 1,800 servicemen and women who died in India during the First World War, who are buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan where their graves can no longer be properly maintained.
