In the 1841 census as John Charman aged 30, born in Sussex, an agricultural labourer, and living with Jane (wife?), George (son?) and Jane (daughter?) at Star Gate, Horsham, Surrey. Star Gate or Star Row, named after the Star Inn which was next door, is now the site of the Roffey shopping centre.
In the 1851 census as John Charman aged 39, born in Slaugham, Sussex, a road labourer, and living with his wife (Jane), two sons (George and James), and four daughters (Ann, Jane, Margaret and Mary) at Tollgate House, Ifield, Sussex.
In the 1861 census as John Charman aged 50, born in Slaugham, Sussex, a labourer on road, and living with his daughter (Jane) and son (John) at Horsham Road Tollhouse, Ifield, Sussex. His marriage status is illegible - I cannot indentify a date for his wife's death.
In the 1871 census as John Chames (sic - in the index, Charman on the original) aged 59, born in Stoughton (sic - in the index, Slaugham on the original), widowed, a labourer and toll collector, and living with his son (Thomas) in Ifield, Sussex.
In the 1881 census as John Charman aged 69, born in Slaugham, Sussex, widowed, a road surveyor, and boarding with his son (John) with Ann Briggs (aged 70, born in Charlwood, Surrey, widowed and a laundress) at West Green, Ifield, Sussex.

There are six entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees for John Charman born in 1811 or 1812 in Slaugham, (one gives Stoughton), Sussex, his marriage to Jane Moore and some of his children, one giving his death in Ifield St Margaret, Sussex, in 1885. One gives his mother as Elizabeth Charman.
John Charman was the father of Margaret Charman, wife of John Baker, my second cousin three times removed.
