In the 1871 census as Thomas Chames (sic - in the index, Thomas Charman on the original) aged 17, born in Ifield, single, a gardener, and living with his widowed father (John) in Ifield, Sussex. (This is the first use of Thomas)

In the 1881 censusas John Charman aged 27, born in Ifield, Sussex, single, a gardner, and boarding with his widowed father (John) with Ann Briggs (aged 70, born in Charlwood, Surrey, widowed and a laundress) at West Green, Ifield, Sussex.

In the 1891 census as John T Charman aged 37, born in Ifield, Sussex, single, a gardner, and lodging with Ann Biggs (aged 80, born in Charlwood, Surrrey and widowed) in Ifield Road, Ifield, Sussex.

In the 1901 census as John Thomas Charman aged 47, born in Ifield, Sussex, single, a postman, and boarding with Ann Bowers (aged 77, born in Charlwood, Surrey, widowed and living on her own means) at 3 South View, Ifield, West Sussex.

In the 1911 census as John Thomas Charman aged 57, single, a postman and lodging with Walter Stenning (aged 30, born in Keymer, Sussex, and a coachman), his wife (Louisa aged 32, born in Turner's Hill, Sussex, married for ten years with one child), their son (Henery William Hoirace aged 9 and born in Crawley, Sussex) and a boarder (George Edward Disher aged 25, born in Ilford, Essex, single and a general labourer) in five rooms at 4 St Peters Road, Crawley, Sussex.

The following article appeared in the Horsham Times on 29th April 1916. “Mr J T Charman, the much respected verger of St Peter’s, West Crawley has just received the sad news that his nephew, Lance Corporal Harry Baker, Royal West Kent Regiment, has been killed in action in Mesopotamia on March 27th. Lance Corporal Baker was an ex soldier and, at the outbreak of war, volunteered his services to his country and had seen much fighting. The deceased was 42 years of age and leaves a widow but no children. Baker was very well known in Crawley.” This referes to Harry Ernest Richard Baker. An entry in Crawley Roll of Honour adds "This was the first of two nephews John Charman lost, the other bring Arthur Stemp in 1918".
