Notes

The date of birth comes from a family bible that belonged to Robert Bishop which has 20th July 1839. The first two digits were written first and the third and fourth added later - However the christening was in 1835. This is believed to have been written by Abednego Bishop who was the father of the husband of Caroline.

There are two entries for the Christening in IGI in Frensham, Surrey on 10 and 16 August 1835, parents Edward and Esther Baker, and there are the same two entries in Ancestry England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. However the entry in the handwritten Bishops Transcripts is 16 August, daughter of Edward Baker (labourer) and Esther. There is also an entry in West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for Elizabeth Baker, daughter of Edward and Esther, on 16 August 1835.

In the 1841 Census as Elizabeth Baker aged 5, born in Surrey, and living with Edward and Esther (parents?), and Alfred and Edwin (brothers?) in Lower Churt, Farnham, Surrey.

In the 1851 Census as Esther (sic - on the original) Baker aged 15, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with her parents (Edward and Esther), two brothers (Andrew who must be Alfred and Albert who must be Andrew) and sister (Ann) in Lower Churt, Frensham, Surrey.

She had a daughter Maria Baker born in 1857, father unknown.

Entry in FreeBMD for the marriage of Elizabeth Baker to John Croucher and John Cromcher (both entries on the handwritten original) in January-March 1859 in Farnham (2a 98).

Entry in the IGI for the marriage of Elizabeth Baker and John Croucher at Frensham on 4 March 1859.

Entry in Ancestry Surrey, England, Marriages, 1754-1937 for Elizabeth Baker aged 24, father Edward Baker, and John Croucher, father Charles Croucher, on 4 March 1859 at Frensham St Mary. "Page 126 1859 Marriage solemnized after Banns in the Parish of Frensham in the County of Surrey No 251 March 4th John Croucher aged 24, a Bachelor and Dealer of Churt, father Charles Croucher, a Potter, and Elizabeth Baker aged 24, a Spinster of Churt, father Edward Baker, a Labourer. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church in the Presence of us, Harry Matthews and Clara Croucher."

Her son was born on 19 December 1860 at Barford Mill, Headley, registered in January-March 1861 in Farnham, and baptised on 13 January 1961 at St Mary the Virgin, Frensham when they were livng in Chert (the old pronounciation).

In the 1861 census census as Elizabeth Croucher, aged 25, born in Frensham, employed as a school mistress at Frensham, and living with her husband (John), two sons (James and William) and daughter (Maria) at Barford, Headley, Hampshire - according to my father it was Barford Lower Mill.

Her daughter was born on 7 February 1865 at Barford Mill, Headley, registered in January-March 1865 in Farnham and baptised on 12 March 1865 at St Mary the Virgin, Frensham.

Her daughter was born on 28 April 1867 at Barford, Headley, registered in April-June 1867 in Farnham and baptised on 2 June 1867 at St Mary the Virgin, Frensham.

St John the Evangelist, Churt was consecrated on 3 March 1868; prior to that Churt was a tithing of Frensham.

The family moved to Keepers/Pond Cottage, Churt at Frensham Pond Tail on 11 October 1870, the same day as the birth her son on 11 October 1870 who was registered in October-December 1870 in Farnham and baptised on 20 November 1870 at St John the Evangelist, Churt with surname Crowcher.

In the 1871 census as Charlotte (sic - on the original) Croucher, aged 36, born in Chute (sic - in index, Churt in original), and living with her husband (John), three sons (Charles, James and William) and four daughters (Ann, Caroline, Esther and Maria) at Frensham Pond Tail End (this implies it was near the hotel, but according to my father it was Keepers Cottage or Pond Cottage near the head of the pond on the A287), Frensham, Surrey.

Her daughter was born on 30 April 1874 at Keepers/Pond Cottage, registered in April-June 1874 in Farnham, and baptised on 14 June 1874 at Churt, St John the Evangelistt.

Her son was born on 17 January 1877 at Keepers/Pond Cottage, registered in January-March 1877 in Farnham, and baptised on 11 March 1877 at St John the Evangelist, Churt, her name spelt Elisabeth.

In the 1881 Census as Elizabeth Croucher aged 45, born in Churt, and living with her husband (John) and two sons (Charles and Ernest) and daughter (Emily) at Keepers Cottage (this would have to be the same as Pond End and Pond Cottage for my fathers records to be correct), Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1891 census as Elizabeth Croucher aged 55, born in Churt, and living with her husband (John), two sons (Ernest and James) and daughter (Carrie) at an unspecified address between Swiss Cottage and Hooks Cottage, Churt, Surrey.

In the 1901 census as Elizabeth Croucher, aged 66, born in Frensham, and living with her husband (John) at Pond End, Churt, Surrey.

Her husband died on 11 October 1905 at Pond Cottage (Keepers Cottage from the burial record), Churt.

Death of Elizabeth Croucher in FreeBMD in October-December 1909 aged 74 in West Ham (4a 173 ) which includes Leyton. On a copy of Entry of Death Number 57 in 1909 in North Leyton, District, Essex Elizabeth Croucher died on 27 December 1909 at 80 Farmer Road, Leyton aged 74 years. She was the widow of John Croucher, a jobbing gardener. She died of bronchitias and emphysema of the lungs. The informant was Anne Ford, her daughter, who was present at her death, but lived at 19 Briscoe Road, Colliers Wood, Merton. The death was registered on 28 December 1909. Farmer Road is to the west of Leyton Midland Road Station - there is a secondary school there. Information from Rupert Guy Randall, her second great grandson, reveals that she was living with her married daughter Caroline.

From my father's notes she was a cousin of Joseph Baker of Crosswater, Churt. Note that Maria was born two years before the marriage - I am not sure who her father was, but my father's records give her name as Mariah Croucher although she remained Baker until she married. Elizabeth was responsible for issuing permits for the extraction of sand from the side of Frensham Pond (the low part next to the A287) - the Lord of Manor at Pierrepont received 1/- per cartload. It was used for building purposes. Her husband died in 1905, and her son James and his family went to live with her at Pond Cottage, but the owner, Mr Compton of Churt House, died shortly afterwards, and they were given notice to quit so moved to Copse or Coppice Cottage on the Furzehills. At some point she must have moved to Leyton, Essex.

There is an entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for Elizabeth Baker born on 16 August 1835 in Churt, Surrey, her marriage to John Croucher, a daughter Caroline, and her death on 27 December 1909 in Leyton, London. Another entry adds her parents as Edward Baker and Hester (Esther) Hall, her marriage on 4 March 1859 at Frensham, Surrey, and eight children but not Maria. There are forty similar entries.
