His father died on 10 July 1905 in Cambridge Drive, Ilford, registered in July-September 1905 in Romford (4A 256) and buried on 14 July 1905 at St Mary The Virgin, Great Ilford.

In the 1911 census as Arthur John Syms aged 7, born in Ilford, Essex, and living with his uncle and aunt (Maurice and Patricia Morgan Baker), and a servant (Lilian May Samders aged 19, born in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands and single) in six rooms at La Maison, La Lachasse, St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

In the Army Service Records of Maurice Baker he had a nephew/son Arthur John Syms born 23 August 1903 in Ilford, living with his wife Patricia M at La Maisonette La Chasse, St Helens, Jersey on 6 November 1916.

In the 1921 census as Arthur John Syms aged 17 years 10 monsths, single a clerk baker (sic not on the original) employed by Sheed Thomson & Co Gardens Agents of Heebernia Chambers London Bridge E C, and living with his mother (Emily) and sister (Doris Audrey) in three rooms at 59 Hampton Roadd, Ilford, Essex.

His daughter was born on 19 January 1932, and registered in January-March 1932 in Richmond.

(sic - in the index, Board on the original) and living with Edith J Durrant (widowed mother-in-law? - treated as a separate household in the index, but sanme address)) and one other (wife? or daughter? - I cannot locate either) at 48 Palewell Park (not indexed), Barnes, Surrey.

His mother-in-law died on 22 October 1950 at 43 Ennerdale Road, Richmond and left effects of £24634 10s 8d to Edith Aline Syms and her husband Arthur John Syms, an automobile engineer.

His mother died in Banstead in 1958 and left effects of £466 16s. 8d to Arthur John Syms motor engineer.

Hi, I inherited my mother’s records on family history and a few objects which belonged to various ancestors who I only vaguely remember hearing about. I have some pictures which belonged to Patricia Auchenloss (or Auchinloss) & googling led me to your webpage on Maurice Baker, which I read with interest – I have at least one piece of furniture which belonged to him. You mentioned my grandfather – Arthur John Syms (aka Jack) who was, in fact, Maurice’s nephew by his sister Emily Baker. Jack’s father was a policeman and died on the beat (possibly a heart attack) in 1905 when my grandfather was 2. My great, great grandmother couldn’t look after both her children and Jack was brought up by his uncle. Maurice died in 1969 in Jersey, having taken early retirement on the grounds of ill health … before the WW2. Patricia died in 1940. They had no children & my grandfather inherited some furniture - & the house etc went to other members of the family. My real search in this case was for more information on Patricia. The paintings I have are of small houses which I presumed to be in Scotland – but I see that she was born in Bangkok… curious. I thought you might be interested in the information about my grandfather. Kind Regards David Bradley
