I cannot find an entry for his birth, but there is an an entry in FreeBMD for James Warden in April-June 1851 in Farnham (4 174) who may well be he.

In the 1851 census as an unnamed son aged 1 day, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with his parents (William and Charlotte Marden) and brother (Henry) who were living with his widowed grandfather (Stephen Baker), two uncles (James and John Baker) and two servants (George Mansell aged 21 single and an agricultural labourer, and Francess Boxall aged 15 and a house servant, both born in Frensham) in Upper Churt, Frensham. The census was held on the night of 30 March.

In the 1861 census as James Marden aged 10, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with his parents (William and Charlotte), brother (Stephen) and two sisters (Elizebeth and Mary) in Churt, Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1871 census as James Marsall (sic - in the index, correct on the original) aged 20, born in Churton, Frensham, a carpenter, and living with his parents (William and Charlotta Marshall , brother (Stephen Marshall), and two sisters (Elizabeth Marden and Mary Marshall), at Churton (sic in the index, Churt on the original), Frensham, Surrey. This was at Dutton? Hill? between Broomfield Cottage and Red Hearne.

Marriage of James Marden and Marian Henrietta West in FreeBMD in April-June 1876 in Farnham (2a 125).

All five children were born in Churt.

In the 1881 census as James Marden aged 30, born in Churt, Surrey, a carpenter, and living his wife (Marion H), son (Reginald J) and two daughters (Mildred and Kathleen B) who were living with his unmarried mother-in-law (Frances E West) and brother-in-law (Harry E West) in Whitmore, Churt, Frensham Surrey. There were four other families at ths address which is between Green Cross and Jumps House. This implies it was The Barracks but the house order is then strange.

In the 1891 census as James Marden aged 40, born in Frensham, Surrey, a carpenter, and living with his wife (Marian Henrietta), two sons (Henry and Reginald), and three daughters (Agnes, Kathleen and Mildred) at Beach Cottage, Churt, Frensham (at the Pride end of Hale House Lane).

In the 1901 census as James Marden aged 50, born in Frensham, Surrey, a carpenter, and living with his wife (Marian), two sons (Henry and Reginald), and two daughters (Agnes and Kathleen) in 4 rooms at at Beeches Cott, Shant Lane (old name for Hale House Lane, Shant being what is now known as the Crossways, "Shan't" being "the most frequent phrase on the lips of the innkeeper's wife" - 100 Years in Churt by U H S Snow about 1970 page 8).

According to my father's records James Marden was living in Beech Cottage around 1908.
