No. 22 Margaret Sligh Purves 1894 July Eightenth 9h P.M. at Little Swinton, parents William Purves, a Farm Servant, and Agnes Purves M.S. Purves married 1894 March 2nd Swinton, informant William Purves Father on 1894 August 4th at Swinton". Sligh was her great grandmother's maiden name.

In the 1901 census as Margaret S Purves aged 6, born in Swinton, Berwickshire, and living with her parents (William and Agnes), sister (Lilli), uncle (Robert ) and grandaunt (Margaret) at Blackadder Mains Farm Cottage, Edrom, Berwickshire.

Her first sister was born at Blackadder Mains, Edrom in 1901, and second at Edrom Mains in 1904.

In the 1911 census as Margret Purves aged 16, born in Swinton Berwickshire, and a servant living with Aly J Nicol (aged 33, born in Tillicoultry, Clackmannshire (sic), and a school master at Edrom P School working at home), his wife (Christina aged 32 and born in Edinburgh, Midlothian, married for 11 years with three children all living), a son (Denis aged 5 and born in Edrom, Berwickshire) and two daughters ( Leila W aged 10 and born in Dumbartonshire, and Moira aged 6 months and born in Edrom) in Edrom.

Entry in the Register of Marriages for Margaret Sligh Purves and James Grieve in 1916 in Duns (735 /2). "1916 Marriages in the Parish of Duns in the County of Berwick. [...] 2 1916 on the Eighteenth day of February at The South United Free Manse, Duns After Banns According to the Forms of the United Free Church (signed) James Grieve Farm Servant (Bachelor) aged 22 of Kimmerham Mill Parish of Edrom, parents Robert Grieve Farmer and Mary Grieve M.S. McKay and (signed) Margaret Sligh Purves Agicultural Labourer (Spinster) aged 21 of Middlestots Parish of Edrom, parents William Purves Farm Servant and Agnes Purves M.S. Purves, Witnesses James Sinton Grieve and Lillie Purves." The Mill and Middlestots are either side of Kimmerghame House, on B6460.

Her first son was born at Middlestots, Edrom on 11 April 1916 and second at Kimmerghame Mill on 19 July 1920.

In the 1921 census as Margt Sligh Grieve aged 26 years 11 months, born in Swinton, Berwick, and living with her husband (James) and two sons (Robert and Willm) in three rooms at Kimmr Mill Farm Cottage, Edrom, Berwickshire. Her parents-in-law were living in the farm house.

Her last two sons were born in Edrom in 1933 and 1941.

Her husband died in Peel Hospital, Galashiels in 1962, but his usual residence was in West Nisbet, Jedburgh.

Entry in the Register of Deaths for Margaret Sligh Grieve, mother's maiden name Purves, in 1983 aged 89 in Kelso (821/ 147).

Relationship

Margaret Sligh Purves was the first cousin of Peter Purves, husband of Isabella Richardson Steele, wife of Robert James Gordon, father of Irene Alice Gordon, wife of George William Barton, brother of Dennis Alfred Barton, my brother-in-law.
