Her sister was baptised on 14 February 1836 when they were living in Cambridge Street and brother on 25 March 1838 when they were living in Cambridge Street, both at St Nicholas, Brighton.

In the 1841 census as Sarah Ann Matthews aged 7, not born in Middlesex, and living with Charles and Sarah (parents?), (William (brother?) and Ellen (sister ?) in Queens Garden, Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex.

In the 1851 census as Sarah Matthews aged 17, born in Brighton, Sussex, and a servant living with Sydney Smith (aged 42, born in Sheerness, Kent and an atorney?), his wife (Susan aged 47 and born in St Andrews, Middlesex), son (Sydney aged 19, born in London, Middlesex, single and a clerk to solicitors), and two other servants (Eliz Hodkisson aged 28, born in Olbury, Warwickshire and single, and Richard Fase (sic - in the index, Fox on the original - her future husband) at 1 Clifton Terrace, Kensington Town, Middlesex.
