Two entries in FreeBMD for the birth of James Henry Matthews in January-March 1859 in Strand (1B 455 and 485, but only the former is on the handwritten original).

Entry in Ancestry Westminster, London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1919 for James Henry Matthews born 5 January 1859 and baptised 13 March 1859 at St Paul, Covent Garden, parents John and Elizabeth Mathews. "Page 200 Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of St. Paul Covent Garden in the County of Middlesex in the Year 1859. 1859. 13th March No. 1593 James Henry son of John [a] Policeman & Elizabeth Matthews [of] 38 Carey St. Born 5 Jan 1859".

His brother was registered in January-March 1861 in St Giles.

In the 1861 census as James H Mathews (sic - on the original) aged 2, born in St Clements, London, and living with his parents (John and Elizabeth), three brothers (Charles J, George T and William L), sister (Elizabeth A) and a servant (Ann Lomax aged 63, born in St Giles, London and widowed) at 14 Great Wild Street, St Giles, Middlesex.

His brother's death was registered in July-September 1862 in Strand.

His sister was born on 24 May 1865 and baptised on 6 August 1865 at St Paul, Covent Garden when they were living in Bow Street. I cannot locate a registration of birth and in censuses was born in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex.

His brother was registered in July-September 1867 in Strand, and baptised on 15 September 1867 at St Paul, Covent Garden when they were living in Cecil Street.

In the 1871 census as James H Matthews aged 12, born in London, Middlesex, and living with his parents (John and Elizabeth), three brothers (Albert E, Charles J and William A), sister (Emily A) and a servant (Jane G Neil aged 16 and born in Bloomsbury, Middlesex) at 3 Craven Street Charing Cross, St Martin in the Fields, London. Two other families shared the same address.

I cannot locate any later information except there is an entry in the 1881 census for a James Matthews aged 22, born in London, Middlesex, single and a private on HMS Eupliates in Indian Troop Services, Durban, Port Natal.
