Birth of Arthur William Luff in FreeBMD in October-December 1867 in Reading (2c 331).
Christening of Arthur William Luff in the IGI on 3 November 1867 at Saint Mary, Reading, Berkshire, parents William and Sarah Luff.
In the 1871 census as Auther (sic) William Luff aged 2, born in Reading, Berkshire, and living with his parents (William and Sarah), and two brothers (Albert Lewis and Earnest Lewis) at 50 Lower Thorn Street, St Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire. However I think this is a duplicate entry for Alfred Luft (sic) aged 3, born in Reading, Berkshire, and living with his grand parents (Edward and Harriett), uncle (Edward) and aunt (Elizabeth) at Shortfield Common, Frensham and this accounts for the next two entries stating he was born in Farnham (although I cannot explain why the name Alfred except that he may have been in transit at the time that the census was filled in and there was a misunderstanding of his name).
In the 1881 census as Arthur Luff aged 13, born in Farnham, employed as a servant and living with Robert J. Baker aged 53 (sic - should be 58), born in Headley, Hampshire, and a farmer of 40 acres employing 2 men and 2 boys, his wife (Lucy aged 46 and born in Binstead, Hampshire), Robert's two sister-in-laws (Ellen and Kate More, aged 40 and 37, both born in Binstead, and unmarried), a domestic servant (Alice Rampton aged 14 and born in Binstead) and a labourer (Stephen Withall aged 17 and born in Milford, Surrey) at Runfold Lane, Farnham. Lucy Baker was formerly Lucy Moore, wife of William Moore of Binstead who had a daughter Kate Ann of the correct age in the 1851 census. I assume that Arthur's mother, Sarah Moore, was a relative. Robert Baker was my first cousin four times removed.
In the 1891 census as Arthur William Lipp (sic - on the original) aged 20, born in Farnham, unmarrried, employed as a domestic groom and living with William Cook (aged 40, born in Bishopstoke, Hampshire, a widower and employed as a coachman) at Coachman's Cottage, Sydmonton Court, Sydmonton, Hampshire.
Marriage of Arthur William Luff and Mary Louisa Alder in FreeBMD in October-December 1894 in Kingsclere (2c 523).
In the 1901 census as Arthur William Liff (sic - in the index) aged 31, born in Reading, Berkshire, employed as a coachman and living with his wife (Mary Louise), and two daughters (Elsie Mary and Sybil Marie) at Old Burghclere, Hampshire.
In the 1911 census as A William Luff aged 36, and living with Marie L (wife?), Arthur O (son?), Elsie M, Helene M, and Sybil M (daughters?) in Kingsclere, Hampshire.
His wife died in Newbury in 1913.
Death of Arthur W Luff in FreeBMD in October-December 1947 aged 80 in Sturminster (6a 553).
Heather Croucher adds he was living at Highclere Castle where he was in charge of the stables.
Heather Galerpt has an entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for Arthur Luff born in September 1867 in Farnham, Surrey, parents William Luff and Sarah Moore, his marriage to Mary Louisa Alder in Kingsclere, Hampshire, three children (Else Mary Liff, Sybil Marie Liff and Helene Marion Luff). Another entry gives his birth in 1868 in Reading, parents William Luff and Sarah Moore, and his marriage to Mary Louise Liff. Two other entries for Arthur William Luff born in 1868 in Reading, Berkshire give his marriage to Mary Louisa Alder. Another gives his mother as Sarah Elizabeth Moore.
David Hornblow has an entry for Arthur William Luff born in 1868 in Reading, Berkshire, parents William Luff and Sarah Moore, his marriage to Mary Louisa Alder in 1894 in Kingsclere, Hampshire, and his two daughters Elsie and Sybil.
Old Burghclere, Sydmonton and Kingsclere are very close to each other and also Watership Down, 10 miles NE of Andover.
Arthur William Luff was my half second cousin once removed.
