In the 1871 census as Alfred Luft (sic) aged 3, born in Reading, Berkshire, and living with his grand parents (Edward and Harriett), uncle (Edward) and aunt (Elizabeth) at Shortfield Common, Frensham.
I cannot find an entry in the Register of Births or any other information except for the 1871 census. His parents are a guess but this is the only family of Luffs in Reading. I believe this is a duplicate entry for Arthur William Luff (although I cannot explain why the name is different except that he may have been in transit from Reading at the time that the census form was filled in and there was confusion over his name). In the 1881 and 1891 censuses Arthur William Luff gives his place of birth as Farnham, and only after his marriage is it given as Reading.
Alfred Luff was my half second cousin once removed.
