Beeston PCC AGM
Chaired by Rev. Jonathan Boston and following the standard format for an AGM, the usual buisness was conducted and officers elected. In the same course of this, part of the meeting was given over to an “Hello” and “Goodbye” session.
We give a warm welcome to John Shakespeare and Bill White who have joined the PCC, and a sad farewell to both Mrs Julie Howarth and Kerry Ludkin. Julie has relinquished her duties as Church Warden but could not bear to be parted from us totally and has agreed to help us out when need! Thank you Julie for all your hard work and lively contributions to our gatherings. Kerry, our extremely competent treasurer, has given us many years of local service in this capacity and for this we thank him. He is shortly hoping to be on the move and so send him our good wishes for the future in his new home.
Entry in Norfolk Record Office Cheshire’s 1941 Norfolk rescue: the untold story of Halifax bomber L9524 Posted on July 14, 2016 by elizabethjayne2015.
Landing in Tacolneston Friday 11th October 1941.
The crew were ordered to adopt crash positions, which meant sitting on the floor in the fuselage with backs against some solid support. They felt the initial bump as the aircraft struck the ground but then were flung about as it careered on over very uneven ground and were waiting for the final crash as they hit a tree – but the crash never came. After much banging and bumping the plane slowed and came to a stop. Dennis opened the rear hatch, looked out and reports “what did I see – cabbages!”

Eyewitnesses and the arrival of Leonard Cheshire.
Six local girls and boys, now in their 80s and 90s, remember the day well and vividly describe their part in the event. Much later they learned that the pilot who arrived from RAF Coltishall and flew the Halifax safely back to its Yorkshire base was none other than Flight Lieutenant Leonard Cheshire, the man later to become Group Captain and eventually Baron Cheshire VC, OM, DSO & Two Bars, DFC.
Kerry Ludkin, then aged 10, lived at Hill Farm, Forncett St Mary and describes the takeoff:
“The engines roared into life and the replacement pilot moved the aircraft over the border, turned it round and down the two fields to the side of the road, turning it round again. A terrific roar ensued as the engines gathered power and once the brake was released the aircraft began to roll forward and rose into full flight, gathering height, circled around in a complete turn, returning over us waving its wings as a farewell gesture.”
