In the 1851 census as William Lesslie aged 7, born in Dundee, Forfar, and living with his parents (John and Margaret), three brothers (David, George and William), and sister (Mary) at 38 West Port, Dundee.

In the 1861 census as William D Leslie aged 18, born in Dundee, Forfarshire, single, a hair dresser, and boarding at 41 Shore, South Leith, (just south of A199). 6 families occupied this address, he was boarding with one which had five rooms with windows.

Marriage of William Duneah (sic - on the original) Leslie to Ann Clemishaw in FreeBMD in January-March 1865 in Knaresbro (9a 120). On a copy of the Entry of Marriage "1865 Marriage soleemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Knaresborough in the County of York No. 345 March 7 William Duncan Leslie aged Above 21, a Bachelor and a Perfumer of Greenock, father John Leslie, a Porter, and Ann Clemishaw aged Above 21, a Spinster of Knaresborough, father William Clemishaw, a Shoemaker. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by License in the Presence of Wm Clemishaw, S. Clemishaw and Charles Robinson." This implies he purchased the Castle Inn after his marriage. The Wm Clemishaw could have been either Ann's father or brother. The S Clemishaw was probably Ann's sister Sarah.

There was also another grave of a Mrs Leslie of No. 7 Golf Place, St Andrews, but it was not known if she was a relative. She was the only Leslie in St. Andrews.
