Notes

Christening of William Empson in the Nottinghamshire Family History Society records on 9 November 1788, at Warsop, parents William Empson and Hannah, living at CW which I assume is Church Warsop.

His brother was born in C Town in 1790, brother and sister in Church Warsop in 1792 and 1794 and sister in WM Woods (William Woods?) in 1796. The family moved to Teversal in about 1897 from the christening of his sister Betty and his brother was born there in 1801.

Marriage of William Empson and Sarah Whiting in the IGI on 30 July 1810 in Spitalfields Christ Church, Stepney, London.

Marriage of William Empson and Sarah Whiting in Ancestry London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 on 30 July 1810 in Spitalfields Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen. "Number 701 page 234 1810 William Empson Bach of this parish and Sarah Whiting Spins of the same parish married in this church by banns this 30th Day of July 1810 [both signed their names] in the Presence of Thomas Bailey and Sarah Ann Robinson".

His daughter was born in Cheapside, London, Middlesex in about 1811.

In the Nottinghamshire Family History Society records for the christening of his daughter it states that in 1819 he was a framemaker living in Chesterfield Street, Nottingham St Nicholas.

In the 1841 census as William Empson aged 45 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), born in Nottinghamshire, employed as a machine smith, and living with Sarah (wife?) and Horatio (grandson?) at Edward Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire.

In the 1851 census as William Empson aged 62, born in Warsop, employed as a machine smith, and living with his wife (Sarah) and grandson (Noratio - sic) at Orchard Square, Nottingham St Nicholas.

His wife died in 1852 - on a copy of her registration of death number 389 in 1852 in Castle, Nottingham it states William Empson, a framesmith, was her husband and she was living at Orchard Place.

I cannot find an entry in the 1861 census nor his death in FreeBMD.

There are thirteen entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees for William Empson.

A framesmith made the frames which were used by framework knitters. In 1589 William Lee of Calverton, Nottinghamshire, successfully converted the actions of hand knitting with two needles into a mechanised process. This was the first knitting frame. Like the hand knitting process, the knitting frame produced a shaped piece of fabric that was then sown together to create a garment - see Knitting Together and The Worshipful Company of Frameworker Knitters.

Warsop is on the A60 22 miles north of Nottingham (not to be confused with Worksop!). Church Warsop is just north where the B6031 crosses. Teversal is some 20 miles north of Nottingham, 4 miles west of Mansfield on B6014.
