From the birth/christening of his siblings the family moved to Yorkshire around 1816, living in Ferrensby, Farnham, and Knaresborough. The family then moved to Ripon although William may have remained in Knaresborough.

In the 1841 census as Wm Clemeshaw aged 32, not born in Yorkshire, employed as a shoemaker, and living with David Clemishaw aged 22 (brother?), William Baker aged 17 (all shoemakers), Robert Smith aged 15 (apprentice) and Jane Gamlin (a servant aged 16) at Castlegate. His wife and two sons George and William were with her parents in Uppleby, Easingwold.

On a copy of Entry 115 in the 1841 Knaresborough Register of Births: Birth of Ann Clemishaw on 16 August 1841 at Castle Gates, Knaresborough, father William Clemishaw employed as a shoemaker and mother Ann Clemishaw formerly Brown. The informant was her father and the birth was registered on the 26 August 1841.

In the 1851 census as William Clesnishaw (sic) aged 46 (sic - on the origina), born in Bury, Lancashire, a shoemaker employing four men and an apprentice, and living with his wife (Ann), three sons (George, David, and William) and two daughters (Ann and Sarah), his brother (David), three lodgers (Robert Pilkington aged 31, Thomas Alderson aged 31, Henry Terry aged 25, all journeymen shoemakers), an apprentice (William Dixon aged 16) and a servant (Bridget Delaine aged 18) at Market Place, Knaresborough.

In 1861 census as William Clemishaw aged 51, born in Bury, Lancashire, a cordwainer employing four men, and living with his wife (Anne), four sons (Daniel, George, John S, and William), two daughters (Amy - sic and Sarah), father-in-law (John Brown) and a servant(Mary Barrett aged 26 born in Knaresborough) at Market Place, Knaresborough.

On the entry of Marriage dated 7 March 1865 number 345 in Knaresborough William Clemishaw is stated to be the father of Ann Clemishaw and was employed as a shoe maker. He may have been a witness at the marriage.

In the 1871 census as William Clemishaw aged 61, born in Bury, Lancashire, employed as a cordwainer and living with his wife (Ann), two sons (George and John T) and a sevant (Mary Holmes aged 14 and born in Whitby, Yorkshire) at Market Place, Knaresborough.

*According to his will made in 10 January 1872 he took out 50 pounds assurance on his life with the Prudential Assurance Company in 1818. The will was witnessed by Robert Brown and Tom Atkinson, and was proved in London on 3 August 1876 by his wife Ann who was sole executor. He appointed his father and his uncles Robert and George Brown executors and trustees.*

Death of William Clemishaw in FreeBMD in July-September 1876 aged 66 in Knaresbro' district (9a 71). On a copy of the Entry of Death Number 405 in Knaresborough district in 1876, William Clemishaw died on 17 July 1876 in Market Place, Knaresborough, aged 66, of abdominal irritation which he had had for 4 days. He was a shoemaker. The informant was John Thomas Clemishaw, his son, who was in attendance, and also lived at Market Place, Knaresborough. The death was registered on 18 July 1876.

Entry in Ancestry England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995 for William Clemishaw died 17 July 1876 in Yorkshire, probate 3 August 1876 in Principal Registry. "Clemishaw William Effects under £200 3 August. The Will of William Clemishaw late of Knaresborough in the County of York Shoemaker who died 17 July 1876 at Knaresborough was proved at the Principle Registry by Ann Clemishaw of Knaresborough Widow the Relict the sole Executrix".

On a copy of the Entry of Death Number 467 in 1885 in the district of Knaresborough for Ann Clemishaw who died on 24 June 1885 at Gracious Street, Knaresborough it states she was the widow of William Clemishaw, a shoemaker.
