Denis Heydecker has an entry in RootsWeb WorldConnect for Matthew Absalom born 1849 in Wapping, Northumberland, parents David absalom and Susanna(h) Lowther, his marriage to Ruth Ellison in 1875, nine children (exluding Mary) and his death in 1911. William and Grace Barras have similar information in Ancestry Public Member Trees but with ten children (however the Mary born 1881 I believe to be the daughter of his brother William Lowther) and the information that in February 1883 he arrived in Victoria Australia on the 'Liguria' with his family. This included his brother William. The Orient Line Ships List states that the Liguria was a Pacific Steam Navigation Company Ship Under Orient Line Management built in 1874, 4,666 tons and in 1880-1890 was in the Orient Line Australia service. The William and Grace Barras entries all refer to Australia, but I am convinced that this is incorrect because according to the death record for their son Matthew the family lived in Reefton, New Zealand.

The following message from Janice Day nee Absalom in Ancestry indicates he emigrated to New Zealand in 1882:
