Ivy was born in Cheetham Hill, Manchester on Novemmber 10th 1911, the second baby of twins, a small baby. She had two sisters and two brothers. She moved with her family to Blackpool in 1918 where her father worked in the house removal business. She learnt the piano and trained and worked as a hairdresser at Haslems in Queen Street, Blackpool. During WWII she served as a Wren from 1943-46 doing administrative duties in Clifton, Bristol. She moved from Raikes Parade, Blackpool to Norwood Road in St Annes where she lived with her sister Eva and her mother. During this time she worked in the office of St Annes War Memorial Hospital in administration, cycling to and from work. Later she moved with her mother to a flat near the hospital at Talbot Court, St Annes Road East and worked right up to her retirement aged 61. During this time she was a member of Toc H and volunteered at the National Children's Home bathing children and helping to put them to bed. The family was very musical and she went with them on a music course as a listener. The man running the course got to know the family quite well and said he wanted her to come back the following year playing an instrument. This must have struck a chord because she quickly learnt to play the recorder and the following year was able to take part as an instrumentalist. She kept practising and regularly played with groups and attended annual recorder courses well into her eighties. She was a member of the Poulton Recorder Group who regarded her as a good musician and enjoyed delicious home made cakes when they met at her bungalow. While living at Wyresdale Avenue, Poulton, she took pride in having a lovely home and garden. She did voluntary work with the Womens Royal Voluntary Service delivering meals on wheels and also helped with bingo at Queensway Lodge, a retirement home in Poulton.
