His parents married on 4 August 1917 at St Mary, New Shoreham.
In the 1921 census as David Abberley aged 4 years 2 months, born in Shoreham, Sussex, both parents alive, and living with his mother (Edith) and sister (Amelia) all boarding with Robert N Wiseman (aged 23, born in Winchester, Hampshire, and a grocer's assistant working at Alfred Mills Grocer, Central Stores, Kings Road, Shalford), and his widowed mother (Annie L Wiseman aged 57 years 9 months and born in Twickenham, Middlesex) in four rooms at 7 Pound Place, Shalford, Surrey. His father was a lance corporal in the Infantry living at The Quadrant, Bridge Street, Guildford.
His father died on 29 November 1925 at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and his mother around the same date, both due to burns from a fire at their house in Shalford, Surrey.

He's May's" in Daily Mirror 5 April 1939, "When I am Well Smiling hope on the faces of David Abberley and his bride - and the spectators - as he was married on a stretcher two months ago ... hope that has now gone" in the Daily Mirror 9 June 1939, and "Stretcher Groom died Happm husband left Southiands Hospital at Shore are shattered. The wedding was originally planned for four months ago but David Abberley was the in hospital in serious condition. Doctors gave him up as hopeless but his fiancee never gave up hope. Alone " in Daily Mirror 9 June 1939.
