In the 1841 census as Friend Pinn (sic - in the index, Paine on the original) aged 20 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), born in Sussex, a mariner and living with Elizabtt (wife?), Elizabtt and Ann (daughters), Elizabeth Humphres (aged 70, born in Sussex) and Catharine Harmon (aged 16 and not born in Sussex) in Upper Russell Street, Palace, Brighthelmstone, Sussex.
In the 1851 census as Friend Payne aged 33, born in Brighton, employed as a waterman and living with his wife (Elizabeth), three sons (Friend, John and Robert), and two daughters (Elizth and Mary) at 2 Russell Place, Palace, Brighton.

In the 1891 census as Friend Payne aged 73, born in Brighton, married, but not living with his wife, employed as a boatman and living with his son (John), daughter-in-law (Jane) and grandson (John J) at 8 Russell Place, Palace, Brighton. His wife was probably still living at The workhouse although she is stated to be a widow.
Death of Friend Paine in FreeBMD in April-June 1895 aged 76 in Brighton (2b 153) and Friend Payne in April-June 1898 aged 80 in Brighton (2b 124).
There are five entries in Ancestry Public Member Trees for Friend Payne born in 1817 in Brighton, died June 1898 in Brighton, his marriage to Elizabeth Denyer on 21 October 1839 in Brighton, and six children (not Anne). T Paine gives his parents as Friend Paine or Payne and Elizabeth, Rebecca Brading, Adam Watts and Taz Lorna as Friend Paine and Elizabeth StevensSlaughter, and Chris and Tony Slater as Friend Paine and E Stevens/Slaughter plus two extra children Friend and Mary. They also have another Wife Mary A Homewood although no evidence for this is given.
Friend Paine was my seventh cousin four times removed.
