In the 1881 census as Ellen M Paine aged 5, born in Brighton, and living with her parents (Thomas and Ellen) and a servant (Elizabeth Wells) at 1 Meeting House Lane, Brighton (another family was living at the same address).
Ellen Paine was present at the marriage of Elizabeth Wells and John Young (her first cousin twice removed) at Barnsbury St Andrew, Islington on 28 May 1883.
