Lionel’s wind of change is a breath of fresh air
Lionel Daniels could well be described as the ‘Woodman of Privett’ as wood is a major part of his life, both professionally and as a hobby, and it has also led to him become a designer.
He and partner Walter Hollist run Designer Woodwork Ltd, on Hurst Lane, and the latest innovation in the workshop is a vertical access wind turbine designed by Lionel which is more compact than ordinary turbines and doesn’t need so much wind power to turn it, thus making it more efficient.
Lionel has also patented another of his inventions, small wooden panels that can be fitted behind lever handles on wooden doors to cut out draughts coming through the keyholes, helping to conserve heat.
He admits it isn’t so much the end product but the pleasure he gets through the stages of turning an idea into a reality and, of course, making it a commercial success.
Born in Petersfield, Lionel went to town secondary school. He began to take an interest in wood when he helped his granddad glue some chairs together and liked the feel of the polished wood.
When he left school he decided to become an apprentice joiner.
“But I didn’t go to college, instead I worked with several good skilled guys to learn my trade. I was also given help by my uncle, Tom Manton, who was a joiner,” he said.
After leaving the Army after the Second World War, Lionel tried to start his own business in Petersfield but had problems with the planners.
He later went to Sierra Leone to help run the Government’s failed Ground Nut Scheme.
As a young man (he is now in his mid-sixties) he worked as a jobbing joiner making everything from wooden panels to staircases and bannisters and lots of “run of the mill stuff”.
He then joined a company called Staple Ash Joinery which specialised in making replacement wood fixtures and fittings for listed houses and rose through the ranks to become managing director.
“We did bespoke work,” he said. “It’s all very well people saying ‘I can get the same down at my local B&Q’ but what we created was totally different, it was specialised.”
He left the company and worked on his own before he and Walter formed Designer Woodwork and as skilled joiners can turn their hand to anything that needs to be made from wood.
Lionel, who is married to Pauline and has two stepchildren, has also made wood his hobby and has a collection of 2,700 wood pieces which have been collected from all over the world.
“Not that I have travelled extensively to get them,” he said. “I belong to the Wood Collectors’ Society and we either meet up or communicate with each other and exchange pieces for our collections.”
Another “wood interest” of Lionel’s is that he is tree warden for High Cross and Privett and is often called on by the parish council to inspect a tree or trees which might be listed for felling in a planning application.
“I report back on how healthy it is, not suffering from any disease, and its importance or not to the landscape.
“On my rounds I also check for vandalism or any trees that may have been damaged or in danger of falling.”
So he fits in his tree warden duties and family life with being a partner in a thriving business that has gained a reputation for producing top-quality workmanship.
