His mother died on 24 August 1852 in Wortley and his father married Martha Austin in 1854.

In the 1861 census as William Foster aged 9, born in Wortley, and living with his father (Joseph), stepmother (Martha), brother (William), two sisters (Elizabeth and Sarah), half-sister (Annie), and half-second cousin (John Austin) in Wapping, Wortley, Yorkshire.

In the 1871 census as William Foster aged 19, born in Wortley, single, a power loom tuner, and living with his father (Joseph), (step)mother (Martha), half-sister (Ann), and niece (Mary) in Low Wortley, Wortley, Yorkshire.

His wife died at 20 Conference Road Armley on 28 November 1897 (this may be the burial date) and buried at Armley Hill Top Cemetery.

In the 1911 census as William Foster aged 59, born in Wortley, a commercial traveler machinery, and living with his wife (Mary) and (step)daughter (Eleanor Clarkson) in six rooms at Woodlands Cottages, Rawdon, Yorkshire.

Mona also states he owned a carding mill in Cleckheaton. He lived in the early 1900s in Rawden before moving to Cleckheaton. There was a quarrel after Phyllis's wedding because they were not invited. Eleanor was not his daughter.

In the 1921 census as William Foster born in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1851 and living with Mary (wife?) in Armley & Bramley, Yorkshire (West Riding).

Death of William Foster in FreeBMD in January March 1926 aged 73 in Bramley (9B 313).

Note that Wortley is an inner city area of Leeds and not in Barnsley.
