This Gendex contains entries for the Browne family, decendents of my ninth great grandmother
Joan. The following is from Shottermill by G Turner (OUP 2004): There was a cottage called Brownes in the 1549 Ministers Account of Pitfold Manor - it was near what is now the A287 on the left descending into Shottermill from Hindhead and today known as Brownescombe. There was another Browne known as Sir Anthony Browne of Battle Abbey who was alive in the mid 1500s - he became the first Viscount Montague of Cowdray, and from 1545 Cowdray Manor included the manor of Linchmere and Shulbrede Priory which was in what is now Shottermill. The Montagues owned many of the iron works in the Shottermill area.
