Born at home at 80 Farmer Rd, Leyton. One of 6 children (1 died young), including Liz (David Irwin’s Mum), Reginald (Mary’s Dad), and Dolly (Christine’s Mum). 1929, joined the Salvation Army. Promoted to Captain. 1931, appointed to Canning Town Slum to serve deprived communities. Chosen to meet Gandhi when he visited the slums. Resigned in 1935 to get married. Had 2 children: Tony and Philip. 1945, moved to Folkestone, where she ran a guest house (Bathurst Rd). Very active in the Mother’s Union, the Samaritans, the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service, and Holy Trinity Church. A very warm and generous grandmother. My sisters and I called her Nan. Christmas with her in Folkestone was a magical experience. Died while being considered for an MBE.
