Notes

Entry in Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837 for Benjamin Belton and Mary Goodbody on 24 June 1823 in East Rudham and another for Benjn Belton and Mary Goodbody in 1823 in West (sic - in the index, East on the original) Rudham.

There is an entry in the Norfolk Transcription Archive for the marriage of Benjamin Belton and Mary Goodbody in East Rudham, Docking in 1823

There is also an entry in Phillimores Marriage Register Volume 8 for Benjamin Belton and Mary Goodbody on 24 June 1823 in East Rudham.

There is also an entry in East Rudham Marriages for Benjamin Belton on 23 June 1823.

His wife, Mary, died in 1832.

In the 1841 census as Benyn Belton aged 35 (rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5), born in Norfolk, employed as a labourer and living with Easter, John Belton, and Maryanne (children?) and Ellen Simmonds aged 25 in East Rudham, Norfolk. Ellen Simmonds aged 25 is given at the same address. Unfortunately there are no relationships given so it is not clear who the children are. John is certainly his son from his first wife but Easter and Maryanne were apparently born after Mary's death and before his second marriage. They could be the children of Benjamin and Ellen. I cannot find a later reference to Easter (who I assume was Esther).

Entry in FreeBMD for the marriage of Benjamin Belton and Ellen Simmons in July-September 1849 in Docking (13 97).

There is an entry in the Norfolk Transcription Archive for the marriage of Benjamin Belton, a widower aged 53, and Ellen Simmons aged 38 in September 1849 in East Rudham, Docking.

On a copy of the entry of marriage number 59 in 1849 at East Rudham parish church for Benjamin Belton and Ellen Simmons on 18 September 1849, it states Benjamin was aged 53, a widower, employed as a labourer, and his father was Henry Belton, a labourer. Benjamin made his mark.

In the 1851 census as Benjamin Belton aged 50, born in Tattersett, Norfolk, employed as an agricultural labourer, and living with his wife Ellen, two sons (John and William) and daughter (Mary Ann) at East Rudham. I believe that William was his grandson rather than son - on the copy of entry of birth of William Belton on 5 October 1843 at South Creeke it states his father was Henry Belton, a labourer, and mother Rhoda Belton nee Tuck. However on the copy of the entry of marriage it states his father was Benjamin Belton, a labourer. On the subsequent censuses William's place of birth is given as East Rudham.

In the 1861 census as Benjamin Belton, aged 55 (on the original although it is at least 5 years out), born in Gatesend, Norfolk, employed as a rat catcher, and living on his own in the Street at the back of the Crown, East Rudham. Gatesend was an alternative name for Tattersett. His wife Ellen was living in as a servant with Elizabeth Drage and family in Bagthorpe Road, East Rudham.

In the 1871 census as Benjamin Belton aged 76, born in Galesend (sic - in the index, correct on the original), employed as a rat catcher and living with his wife (Ellen) at The Anchorage, East Rudham.

Entry in FreeBMD for the death of Benjamin Belton aged 80 in January-March 1879 in Docking (4b 247). Date of birth calculated from this entry

There is an entry in East Rudham Deaths for Benjamin Belton on 14 March 1878 (sic).
