Notes

Birth of George Baker in FreeBMD in October-December 1855 in Hambledon (2a 71) which included Elstead - this seems to have been over a year late if correct.

Christening of George Julius Baker in the IGI on 20 August 1854 in Elstead, Surrey, but no parents are given. Thus his mother is a guess (confirmed by Betty Baker), but the census entries give Thomas and Sarah Baker as his grandparents.

In the 1861 census as George Baker aged 8, born in Elstead, Surrey, and living with his grandparents (Thomas and Sarah), uncle (Edward), aunt (Fanny), brother (Fredrick ), and a visitor (William Chandler aged 17, born in Bedfordshire, single and a journeyman potter in earthenware) in Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1871 census as George Basler (sic - in the index, Baker on the original), aged 17, born in Elsted, Surrey, and living with his grandmother (Sarah Baker), uncle (Edward) and a servant (John Burl aged 21, born in Kingsley, Hampshire) in in Upper Churt, Frensham, Surrey.

Marriage of George Baker and Margaret Mitchell in FreeBMD in April-June 1880 in St Saviour (1d 120).

In the 1881 census as William Baker aged 4, born in London, and living with his parents (George and Margaret), two brothers (Arthur and Harry), and two sisters (Kate and Nellie) in three rooms at 125 Peel Street, St George Campden Hill, Kensington, London.

His first son was born in Deptford, Kent in 1884, but the family had moved back to Kensington by 1886 where the remaining children were born.

In the 1891 census as George Baker aged 38, born in Surrey, a police constable and living with his wife (Margaret), son (Arthur J) and three daughters (Alice, Kate E and Nellie B) at 11 Nivern Road, Brompton, Kensington, London.

In the 1901 census as George Baker aged 48, born in Elstead, Surrey, a police constable, and living with his wife (Margaret), three sons (Arthur, Harry and William), and two daughters (Kate and Nellie) in three rooms at 125 Peel Street, St George Campden Hill, Kensington, London.

In the 1911 census as George Baker aged 58, and living with Margaret (wife?) and George and Harry (sons?) in Kensington, London.

Patricia McNamee has four entries in RootsWeb WorldConnect for George Baker born in 1851 in Elstead, Surrey, married to Margaret Mitchell Southwark, Greater London (which did not exist at the time - Southwark was in Surrey until 1889) in 1880, and five children (not including Alice). She also has an entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees with the same information.

The following entry from Bakers of Headley states George was the son of Thomas rather than Hannah. While possible it does not explain why there are no parents in the christening entry, the birth was registered a year late, and why his brother Frederick was living with another family very soon after his birth. I suspect he has been confused with Thomas's son George born 1851.
