In the 1861 census as George A Maker (sic - in the original) aged 10, born in Odiham, and living with his parents (Thomas and Susan), four brothers (Alfred, Frederick, Joseph H and Walter), sister (Elizabeth), a lodger (Elizabeth Pharoh aged 63, born in Odiham, widowed and independent), an apprentice (John Sharp aged 15 and born in Odiham and a visitor (Eliza Colyer aged 16, born in Elstead, Surrey and a farmer's daughter) in the High Street, Odiham.
In the 1871 census as George A Baker aged 20, born in Odiham, Hampshire, unmarried, a journeyman watchmaker, and living in the High Street, Aldeburgh, Suffolk. He is an assistant, but there is no head of household. The most senior is Benjamin G Lincoln? (in the index but illegible on the original) aged 77, born in Norwich Norfolk, an uncle (of whom?), widowed, and a retired jeweller, a daughter (of whom?) Emily Ann Norris aged 12 and born in Woodbridge, Suffolk, a neice (of whom?) Emma W Kirby (in the index, illegible on the original) aged 21, unmarried and an assistant in the shop, an apprentice (watchmaker's) Thomas C Harris aged 16 and born in Manningtree, Essex, and a general servant (Eliza Ralph aged 20, born in Friston, Suffolk, and unmarried).
Marriage of George Aaron Baker and Annie Isabella James in FreeBMD in July-September 1876 in Oxford (3a 972). On a copy of Entry of Marriage No. 112 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Oxford, on 11 August 1876 George Aaron Baker aged 25, a bachelor living at 29 St Giles, Oxford married Anne Isabella James aged 18. He was a watchmaker and his father was Thomas Baker, farmer. The marriage was witnessed by Robert James and Elizabeth Mary Baker.
In the 1881 census as George A Baker aged 30, born in Odiham, Hampshire, watchmaker and jeweller and living with his wife (Annie B), son (George F), daughter (Edith C), two apprentice watchmakers (Herbert E Cope aged 19, born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, and single and Alfred R Taylor aged 16 and born in Piccadily, London) and a servant (Alice Vinnell aged 20, born in Doulting, Somerset and single) at 29 St Giles West, Oxford St Giles, Oxfordshire.
His daughter Annie was born in Gloucester in 1883 so I assume the family moved there before then.
In the 1891 census as George A Baker aged 40, born in Odiham, Hampshire, a watchmaker, jeweller and employer, and living with his wife (Annie I), son (Alfred R), three daughters (Annie J, Edith C and Miller I (sic - in the index)) and a servant (Eiliza A Willis aged 15, and born in Gloucestershire) at 128 Oxford Road, Gloucester St Catherine, Gloucestershire.
In the 1901 census as George Baker aged 60 (on the original), born in Odiham, Hampshire, a jeweller and optician and an employer, with his wife (Annie), and living with his brother ( Alfred), his wife (Eliza), three sons (Eric, Frank and Walter), daughter (Lilian) and two servants (Annie Philips aged 20, born in Maesbury, Shropshire, single and a domestic housemaid and Mary Ann Wainwright aged 20, born in Market Drayton, Shropshire, single and a domestic cook) at 3 Stensham Hill, Moseley, Kings Norton, Worcestershire (off A435 Alcester Road near Park Hill). I suspect he was just visiting his brother because his children were living without a head of family at Alexander Road, Gloucester St Nicholas, Gloucestershire.
His wife died in 1907.
On the entry in Commonwealth War Graves Commision for the death of his son Alfred Robert in 1917 his address is given as 5 Southgate St., Gloucester - however I believe this was out of date because it also refers to his wife and is based on Canadian Army Records. On the entry for his son Walter also in 1917 his address is given as Ingledene, Alexandra Rd, Gloucester and on Walter's War Medal Record George is stated to be a JP.
There is an entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for George Aaron Baker born in 1850 in Odiham, Hampshire, father Thomas Baker, his marriage to Anne Isabell James on 11 August 1876 in Oxford, his six children, and the 1871-1891 census entries.George Aaron Baker was my half second cousin twice removed.
