Her father died in Gloucester in 1900.
In the 1901 census as Hilda Adelaide Arnold aged 2, birth place unknown, and boarding with Harry Sopely (aged 24, born in Thorney, Cambridgeshire and a ? labourer), his wife (Annie Sopeley aged 28 and born in Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire) and Hilda's brother (Arthur William Arnold) in Mill Road, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Her widowed mother, brother and two sisters were living at 145 High Street, Gloucester.
