In the 1881 census as John Croucher aged 32, born in Lambeth, Surrey, employed as a labourer, and living with his wife (Charlotte), four sons (Albert, Alfred, John and Thomas) and daughter (Charlotte) at Prescott Place, 2 Bakers Cottages, Clapham, Surrey.

The following information is from Tom Croucher of Australia: George Charles Croucher had three sons, and the younger two (John and Alfred) moved to Sydney, Australia, shortly after George died around 1882. In 1884 John Croucher moved into a home in Norton Street Leichhardt (in Sydney) which was previously the home of John Bute Croucher, a son of William the convict.

Phillipa A Andrew has the following information: John James Croucher was born on 21 January 1849 at 8 James Street, Lambeth Walk, Surrey, parents George Charles Croucher and Sarah Rollinsson, married Charlotte Rosina Baptist on 18 April 1868 at St Stephen’s Church, Lambeth, Surrey, by Allan T Edwards, jnr with James John Baptist and Mary Emma Ellis as witnesses, his eight children and his death on 3 December 1921 at 248 Norton Street, Leichhardt, NSW, Australia, and burial on on 5 December 1921 in the C of E Cemetery, Rookwood. She adds

"When an appeal for labourers was sent to England from Australia John found himself at a crossroad of life, living out his family name. The chance had come for him and, eventually, his family, to leave the inner London slums for a very different life. John responded, putting down his age to 28 years and posing as a single man. He arrived in Sydney, NSW, aboard the Assaye in 1883. Soon after his arrival John resumed his trade as a printer. After John had settled he sent for his family who arrived in 1885 aboard the Gulf of Mexico. A John Croucher, printer, is found at Cottenham Street, Glebe in the 1886 directories. This was a business area. There is also a John Croucher at 2 Eden Cottages, Station Street, Petersham. This may have been his residential address. In 1887 John Croucher, printer, was living at Macauley Street, Leichhardt. From 1887 to 1913 the family lived at 242 Norton Street, Leichhardt, although the house is listed in the name of A Croucher in 1902 and 1903. There is a mystery here. From 1889 to 1892 the house is in the name of John B Croucher, described as a printer in 1889 and 1890. Yet John B Croucher was a butcher by trade and not related to the family discussed here. I suspect some confusion by the authorities between John J Croucher, printer, a newcomer to Sydney and John B [Bute] Croucher, butcher, [a long-time resident of NSW]. By 1914 the family has shifted to 248 Norton Street, Leichhardt where John had built a small timber cottage with the help of his family. Members of the family continued to occupy the cottage until 1997, a period of about 83 years. Some of the descendants of John and Charlotte still live in Leichhardt. The family has now had an association with the Leichhardt district for at least 120 years. John does not appear on the electoral rolls from 1910 to 1920. Enrolment was not compulsory during this period. Since he had enrolled earlier it is possible that he was unwell during this latter part of his life and so was no longer enrolled."

Leichhardt is 5 miles WSW of Sydney.
