In the 1871 census as Frances West aged 9, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with her parents (Thomas and Frances) and a boarder (Abraham Shrubb) at Bats Corner, Rowledge, Frensham.

In the 1881 census as Francis (sic - on the original) West aged 19, born in Frensham, a general domestic servant and living with Martha Phillips (aged 82, born in Otterbourne, Hampshire, and an annuitant) and a companion ( Mary Kennard aged 33, born in Chelsea, London, Middlesex and single) at Spreakly, Frensham, Surrey.
