A Positive Experience
Since moving from New Zealand three years ago, Trevor and Tracy Simkin have found dairying in the Murray region a highly rewarding experience. The couple have been dairying for 25 years and are now at a point in their lives where they “feel the need for a change”. However they have found the region so appealing that they plan to remain in the area and in the rural scene.
“When we came over, we only looked at the Murray Dairy area because we had friends there, the weather was appealing compared to New Zealand and most importantly secure water was available. Also, compared to New Zealand we could afford to buy land there."

Dairying expert Trevor Simkin has been appointed farm manager of the Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research's dairy property. The move is part of a planned revamp of the Elliot research station that will provide a greater focus on key research specifically for the dairy industry.
Originally from New Zealand, Mr Simkin has spent several years working in the dairy industry in northern Victoria. Dairy Centre Leader, Danny Donaghy, said Mr Simkin's extensive experience right across the dairy industry from share farming to management and consultancy made him ideal for the job.
"By having Trevor there as the manager it will allow us to focus on the research side of things and he will look after the day-to-day management," Mr Donaghy said.
Mr Simkin spent 21 years in the New Zealand dairy industry working his way up from a dairy apprenticeship through to share farming.
He moved to northern Victoria and bought a farm there in 2003 and in 2008 purchased a second farm. Mr Simkin said the opportunity to become involved with consultancy work had also given him some experience with different aspects of the industry. A big part of his role at Elliot will be improving and developing the farm so that it is run on a more commercial basis but still with a strong research focus. "It's a massive job and a challenge we haven't undertaken lightly but I think we'll be able to get a lot done here," he said.
Mr Simkin, who has been at the station for just two weeks, said he was initially looking at improvements to the farm's layout and general appearance. "I'm not trying to come in and change things overnight but we want to get the farm back to the point it was 20 years ago when it was really an industry leader ... we want this to be a place we can all be proud of," he said.
"Any research and information that comes out of here has to be relevant for farmers today and also looking forward and that's a really important part of what we're doing now. Mr Simkin said by bringing together the research and farming sides of the station on a more commercial basis, where research work was costed, it would ensure the project information coming out of the farm could be used by producers with confidence.
