In the 1841 census as Margret Purves aged 3 months, born in Berwickshire, and living with John and Christian (parents?), John, Peter, and Robert (brothers?), and Agness, Janet, and Mary (sisters?) in Old Edrom, Berwickshire, Scotland. The census was on 6 June 1841 so she was born in February or March.

In the 1851 census as Margaret Purves aged 10, born in Edrom, Berwick, and living with her parents (John and Christina), two brothers (Peter and Robert), and two sisters (Janet and Mary) in a house at Old Ladykirk, Ladykirk, Berwickshire, Scotland.

In the 1861 census as Margaret Purves aged 19, born in Edrom, Berwickshire, an agricultural lablourer, and living with her parents (John and Christian), brother (Robert), sister (Agnes), married sister (Mary Ainslie) and nephew (William Ainslie) at Winfield, Whitsome, Berwickshire, Scotland.

Her daughter was born in Whitsome on 2 April 1862 - father inititially stated to be unknown, but a legal case resulted in John Dumma Hind a Farm Servant being the father. Register of Births "Page 3 Register of Corrected Entries for the Parish of Whitsome in the County of Berwick In the Fourth Column of Entry No. 9 in the Register Book of Births for the year 1862 before the name of the Child's Mother insert John Dumma Hind a Farm Servant, on the authority of a Certificate in the Form of Schedule(?), to the following effect:- In an action relating to the paternity of a Child named Agnes Purves, born April 2nd 1862 at the instance of Margaret Purves daughter of John Purves, Labourer, Wynfield against John Dumma Hind, a Farm Servant, Wynfield the Sherrif Court of Berwickshire. on the 24th of June 1862 found that the said Child was the Illigitimate Child of the parties aforesaid. July 5th 1862 at Whitsome. 28th July 1863".
