You pay for peace of mind We were burgled at our last house and it's a thoroughly unpleasant experience. Much of this was the knock on effects - I could no longer come home without checking every room to reassure myself no one had been in while I had been out! We sold up and moved not long after to a house with a burglar alarm fitted. I don't think the alarm deters burglars at all, but when I come home I know immediately that no one has been in and the peace of mind it provides is priceless. It doesn't save us any money on our contents insurance - you need a pretty fancy (ie expensive) alarm for that, but I no longer worry when I'm out that I'm being burgled. Fit an alarm, but don't bother telling your insurers - you might not be covered the one time you forget to set it. Caroline Bowden, Leicester
