Sheena's adult learning achievement a great inspiration
A Coldstream woman who embarked on a series of adult education courses three years ago has gone back to school for good as a classroom assistant.
Sheena Gillie's remarkable achievement has earned her a string of new qualifications and a nomination for a Borders Television adult learners' award.
The winner of the award will be announced tonight (Thursday) in Aviemore but for Sheena who won the Scottish Qualifications Award at the 2002 Scottish Borders Adult Education Awards in March it's enough just to be nominated.
"I was totally amazed and stunned," said Sheena who completed ten courses at Coldstream before moving on to further training Northumberland College in Berwick.
A single parent on low income, she decided to take advantage of some of the low cost and free courses on offer once her two daughters Cally, 15, and Lee, 10, were both attending school full time.
"My children were getting older and more independent," she explained. "I wanted to do something for myself and get my mind working again."
After training as a classroom assistant, she took on a work placement at Cornhill Primary School last year and was offered a permanent job there in January. She also spends an hour a week helping out at Coldstream Primary and is studying to become a special needs assistant.
"It's absolutely fantastic," said Sheena. "When I first started doing the courses I didn't know what I wanted to do but everyone said I was good with children and everything I did seemed to lead me that way. It is definitely worth it, although I maybe didn't think so when I was writing all the essays!"
Sheena was nominated for the award by adult education worker Catherine Hadshar, of Scottish Borders Council.
Ms Hadshar said: "In the last three years, Sheena has been in Coldstream and been doing every single course on offer through continuing education. She didn't have any transport but wanted to continue learning and work in schools. As she carried on, her confidence built up.
"It is testament to her versatility - she took what was on offer and went from strength to strength. She also did a training course to be a tutor for adult literacy work and helps tutor a student in Coldstream. She is an inspiration to us all."
But Ms Hadshar admitted that recent cuts in the continuing education service in the Borders would impact on the range of opportunities available to people like Sheena.
"The chances are that the number of courses on offer will be reduced because there won't be the tutors to take them which means that people like Sheena will not have the choices they had before," she said.
