His three brothers were born in Helmsley from 1904 to 1907.

His mother died at 4pm on 2 April 1910 at Hendersyde Farm, Edam, Roxbughshire Scotland

In the 1911 census as James H Lauder aged 8, born in England, and living with his widowed father (William), three brothers (George H, Henry and William) and a servant (Margaret Robinson aged 26, single and born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland) in two rooms with windows at Lauder Cottage, Sprouston, Roxburghshire, Scotland.

His father married Janet Millar McCraw on 30 April 1912 in Sprouston.

In the 1921 census as James H Lauder aged 18 years 9 months, born in Helmsley, England, single, a ploughman for Geo S C Watson farmer, and living with his father (William), (step)mother (Janet), two brothers (George H, Henry K) and two (half)brothers (John J and Robert M C) and stepmother's daughter (Elizabeth J) in three rooms at Farm Cottages, Lundenlaw, Sprouston, Roxburgh and Selkirk.

He was present at and the informant of his father's death on 6 April 1935 at Kersknowe, Eckford when he was living at 10 Roxburgh Street, Kelso.

His first two sons were born in Birgham, Eccles in 1935 and 1938, and son and daughter (twins) in George Square, Edinburgh in 1941.

He was the informant on the death of his sister-in-law Mary Hogg on 1 November 1968 in Coldstream.

His wife died in Border, Cumberland in 1970, and was buried in Kelso Rosebank Cemetery.
