In the 1901 census as John W Hume aged 11, born in Middlesborough, Yorkshire and living with his parents (William and Elizabeth Ann), brother (Harold J), three sisters (Agnes M, Flora J and Lavinia), and cousin (Edith K Jones) at 60 Milton Street, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.

His father died in Middlesborough in 1910.

In the 1911 census as John W Hume aged 21, born in Middlesbro, Yorkshire, single, a surveyor's assistant for Eston UD Council and living with his widowed mother (Elizabeth A), brother (Harold), and three sisters (Flora J, Gwendoline and Lavinia) in fifteen rooms at Alexandra Hotel, South Bank, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.

His first daughter was born in Harrogate in 1917 and the five other children in Middlesborough in 1920 to 1927.

There are confusing and often illegible entries in Ancestry British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 for John William Hume height 5 ft 9.75in, chest 35.5+2.5 in, wife Mirriam Mallaby address Alexandra Hotel, Middlesborough Road, South Bank, having married on 10 July 1916 at Brunswick Wes Chapel Stockton. He had a daughter Gwendoline Alice born on 1 May 1917 in Harrogate. His occupations are stated to be hotel manager for Mrs Gibson (his mother who married Thomas P Gibson in October-December 1916 in Middlesborough), a sanitary inspector, and a munitions worker. He attested on 29 August 1916, and was mobilised on 21 December 1916 as private 41827 in West Yorkshire Regiment, and was home 21 December 1916 to 11 December 1917, deprived of 2 days pay for overstaying final leave at Whitby Bay on 20 November 1917. He was transfered as sapper 364025 in Royal Engineers and was in France from 12 December 1917 to 11 October 1919. He received a disability (illegible) and received 5s 6d plus 1s 4d for his daughter for 52 weeks from 18 November 1919 when he was discharged at Chatham, his address being given as 1 Wood Street, Stockton on Tees. His records were confused with those of another J W Hume.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register as John W Hume born 27 February 1890, married, a works clerk in heavy chemical industry, and living with Miriam Hume (wife?), Stanley M and Roderick Hume (sons?), Miriam S Hume (daughter?) and two others at Hume's Stores, 25 Roseberry Road, Billingham, Durham.
