His mother committed suicide on 9 April 1899 at 8 Mersey Road, Rock Ferry, Birkenhead after her husband left her and left letters asking her mother to look after her son.

(Walter L) who was boarding with Joseph Gripton (aged 65, born in Bloxwich, Staffordshire, and a milk dealer), his wife (Sarah aged 62 and born in Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire), and two sons (Charles aged 19 and Fred Wm aged 21, both born in Stafford, Staffordshire, single and plumbers) at 11 Rial Street, Hulme, South Manchester, Lancashire.
