Smail, [and] Isabella Edgar [aged] 30 [of] Raecloughheaed Parish of Langton, [parents] James Edgar Miller (deceased) [and] Caroline Edgar M.S. Smith, witnessed John Hood [and] Jane Edgar.
In the register entry for the birth of Margaret on 10 July 1865 he was a ploughman living in Coldingham having married Isabella Edgar on 24 May 1861 in Duns. His second daughter was born in Duns in 1863, and third in Ayton.
In the 1871 census as Robert Hamilton aged 37, born in Fala, Haddingtonshire, an agricutural labourer, and living with his wife (Isabella), three daughters (Caroline Smith, Jane and Margaret), mother-in-law (Caroline Edgar), step-son (William Edgar) and a servant (Mary Ann Potertard aged 31 and born in England) at Lintlaw Ag Lab Cottage, Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire.
His son was born in Swinton in 1878.
