Her father died in Greatham in February 1866, and her motther appears to have married Thomas Marner Philps by 1871 although I cannot locate a marriage.
In the 1871 census as Sarah Ann Garden (sic - in the index, Gosden on the original) aged 7, born in Greatham, Hampshire, and living with her stepfather (Thomas M Phillips), mother (Jane), brother (Albert) half-brother (James) and a lodger (Robert Bater (aged 66, born in Chawleigh Devon, single and a hawker) in Combe, Rogate, Sussex.
In the 1881 census as Sarah A Gosden aged 18, born in Greatham, Hampshire, single, a domestic servant living with her stepfather and mother (Thomas M and Jane Philps), two (half)brothers (Dick and Hori H) and four (half)sisters (Bertha, Fanny K, Mary and Matilda) in London Road, Rogate, Sussex.

Another famliy lived at the same address.
Her son was baptised on 22 April 1893 at St James Weybridge when they were living in Weybridge, another son was baptised on 25 February 1895 at St Saviour Battersea when they were living at 2 Chesney Street, and another three sons were baptised on 7 April 1897, 8 June 1898 and 8th June 1898 at St Peter and St Paul, Teddington when they were living at 1 Albany Terrace, Walpole Road.
In the 1901 census as Sarah Carpenter aged 38, born in Greatham, Hampshire, and living with her husband (Walter), four sons (Frederick, Herbert, Sidney and Walter), daughter (Annie), and a servant (Frances Johnson aged 14 and born in Isleworth, Middlesex) at 37 South Street, Isleworth, Middlesex.
Her two sons were baptised on 2 February 1902 and 12 October 1904 at St Mary Mortlake when they were living at 45 South Worple Way.
